Post Ac only blows out defrost/ cruise does not work/ rough idle
ok. Was a jeep tech for several years, just joined the site and thought i would put my time in and help a little with tech.

Common problem on cherokees (xj)

Symtoms: Ac or heat only blows out of defrost. Crusie control will not activate. Rough idle, low idle.

Problem: Vacume hose, located under battery tray has been eaten through with batt acid. Since the engine vacume controls all of the above functions. You should have all the above issues, given everything else is working properly.

Correction: Generally make sure current battery is clean and not spilling out acid water. Take a small peice of vacume tubing, cut plastic line and make a easy splice. Can pick up tubing at advanced cheap. Simple 30 min fix. Sometimes required to take out battery if hose hole location is to hard to reach. Thanks  let me know if this helps with a easy post!

It could also be the vacuum bottle mounted to the back of the front bumper.

Yes, any vacume leak can cause this issue, my point was this is a very common problem with the battery acid draining down onto the vacume hose. I have actually never replaced a vacume bottle on a xj in the 8yrs i have worked on them. But that is not to say it doesnt happen. The first place i always look when these symptoms are apparent is the hose at the battery. It saves alot of diagnostic time and $ for people.

The bottle on my XJ was busted when I bought it.

this info is exactly the same for WJs as well, except the line under the battery is normally cracked, not eaten up by battery acid.
