Post Homemade Disconnects
I broke my sway bar links when putting on my lift.  Ordered new extended links.  Decided to replace the bottom bolt with a stud and Pin to act as disconnects.

I bought a shoulder bolt/axel bolt a few washers and a pin at ACe Hardware. I drilled a hole through the bolt, then took the bolt head off with my grinder.

Complete with the link attached:

looks good!

but why didnt you do the typical clevis pin version? would not have been as much mod work to the bolt? nothing wrong with yours just curious as to why you went outside the box? lol

I was thinking that If i just went with the clevis pin, that when disconnected i have this pin and washers to keep track of.  With my setup the the stud will remain bolted to the bracket.

It also looks like it would be easier to swing yours out of the way.  They look pretty similar to my JKS disco's

I like the design.  Do the shoulder bolts fit snug in the bushing on the link?  I didn't do clevis pins because they don't fit tight and will "clunk".

I just pulled out my bolts, cleaned them on the wire wheel on the grinder, and greased them up real good.  With a ratchet with the T55 and a ratcheting 18mm wrench I can disconnect in a couple of minutes.  I just have to keep the bolts well greased.  To your point earlier, I have to keep track of the bolts still.

:bigthumb:

This is why spending $100+ on JKS or similar disconects is one of the biggest waste of money. It's one of the only things that people will gladdy pay money for nothing on.

i noticed last night while my jeep was on the lift...i think when my buddy heated up the other side to remove old bolt...i think he bent the bracket a little. even when the jeep is level on a lift the bottom pin is at a bad angle.

gonna need to find someone to heat it up and beat it down some. :(

I drilled the hole as so that the pin is right against the washer should be as tight as the JKS.

Sorry, I was talking about the diameter of the shoulder bolt.  Does it fit snug inside the bushing on the link?  The clevis pins do not, resulting in the "clunk".

Yes shoulder bolt is same diameter as the stock bolt.  Still have to use the steel sleeve.  can't remember if it was 1/2 or 7/16.  I took the bushing  and the sleeve with me to Ace.

If I remember right a 9/16 diameter would fit in the bushing, but I couldn't find shoulder bolts that thick.  I went with a smaller diameter shoulder bolt that fits tight into the bushing sleeve.  I was hoping to not have to use the bushing sleeve.  I might check at fastenal if I get a chance.
