XJ alignment help

Post by VINNY » Wed Jun 24, 2009 7:11 pm

I need to know how to do a driveway alignment
My steering wheel is out of center and I need help I understand that the drag link aligns the wheel but from what I've read you have to measure from the wheels to something (I don't know what?) to adjust the toe. I think VEC did a write up a while ago but I can't find it.
Has anyone done this to an XJ ????
I am just trying to be cheap and don't want to go to a garage

measure between your tires in the front . you can measure from the middle of tread or you can measure from the sidewall but be carful for the raised lettering. measure the front and remember your measurement. then measure the back side of your tires. for example if the front measurement was 54 inches and the back measurement was 54 an 1/2 then your TOE'D IN 1/2 an inch. stock measurement on your xj should be toe'd in 1/8th and inch from factory if you have the cammandtrac transfer case. if have the other tcase (cant remember the name) then your tires should have the same meausurement in the front and back of the tires. loosen tie rod clamps and rotate the tie rod with a pipe wrench.

for the steering wheel loosen the two bolts on the draglink clamps, have somone watch your steering wheel and rotate the draglink peice untill your stering wheel is centered.

the link that effecte the steering wheel in the one from the steering box to the other linkage. It really has nothing to do the wheel alignment.
Although many people think it does.
Unless you have changed a part, bent a link, worn out a part, OR LIFTED OR LOWERED the vehicle the alignment won't change untill it one of the above has happened.
