2003 2.4L rear main seal?

Post by terrible » Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:56 pm

Has anyone ever changed the rear main seal on an '03 or newer 2.4L tj? Mine went out tonight after a quick trip on the trails. Got her home an left the doors open to dry out the floors, went back out two hours later and there's an oil puddle the size of a dinner plate under the jeep.

Already pulled the oil pan and inspection plate. Looks like the main bearing caps are part of a large girdle that runs the length of the crank. So it doesn't look like I can pull the rear cap without pulling the whole bottom end out.

Looking like I have to pull the transmission and go at it that way.

Autozone and advance both show a one piece seal anyhow so it would make sense that I have to go at it from the trans side.

Oh fun fun...

FYI, the seal comes out from the rear of the motor once the trans has been pulled. No large snags tonight other than bench-pressing my transmission out myself.
