Radiators...

Post by Dswear22 » Mon Mar 17, 2014 6:02 pm

Can someone school me on 4.0 radiators. Seems the XJ has a small leak & needs one & i can't tell what i really have. Mine as far as i can tell it is fully aluminium & most of the cheaper ones i'm finding are plastic. Guess there was a normal, an HD cooling option and i found a brass & copper body one in the aftermarket. Does moving up to a dual row make a difference? I'm afraid of dropping to the plastic one not being enough to cool it. Its a 4.0 auto w/AC and i don't remember it having an external oil or tranny cooler.

Building a capable off road Jeep is easy...building a street legal one that you can drive two hours away to wheel and then drive to work the following morning is the challenge.

agreed with both I have one now. the plastic ones are only as good as the rest of the system. good pump good hoses working tstat good flush ect ect.

maintance is best friend.

the xj rad is roughly 31 by 11 single row.. single row is good if list above is right plus properly working fans. the more rows you get into the smaller the tubes inside will get, this can cause less cooling. to solve the tranny cooler buy an aux one the factory one in the rad is just a sleeved tube inside the end cap. really not a cooler for tranny.

Personally, I would go with one from AutoZone. Seemed to be a little more durable than the AAP one. Had to change the rad on every xj I've owned. The three I got from advance all had holes in them out of the box.

I got an all aluminum two row radiator off ebay for under a hundred bux delivered. It was for a Zj but since they offered a Tj one too I'd assume that they'd have an Xj as well.

If you want I can look up the company in my purchase history.

i just got a 2 core copper from summitracing for 160 it is all metal construction. The factory radiator in the the xj is a 1 core aluminum fins with plastic tanks on the sides they do good but are prone to crack and leak after enough time. any replacement you got will be fine as long as you have some sort of warranty. I have installed the auto zone equivalent in an xj before and had great success.

I got a Champion all aluminum off Ebay for the TJ for a good price. It appeared to be a little bigger than the stock one.

It will help with cooling if you can increase the volume of coolant and/or increase the surface area of the radiator, without restricting air flow.
