Installed a Bestop Extendatrunk

Post by jtice » Fri Jul 04, 2008 6:56 pm

Installed my Bestop Extendatrunk today.
My current solution kinda sucked, just a bunch of separate containers and bags strapped down.
I had a metal box mounted on the right side for a while, but it wasnt large enough, and was too clangy.
Image

The nutlets you install in preexisting holes in your wheel wells were crap, I ended up welding them in.
And the slots on the box itself needed widened up a bit.
But it seems to have sent in pretty solid. The back installed with basically hooks that go down to the seat brackets (on 03 and older)
They have a bit of rattle to them, but my gear bags are up against them, so I dont think it should be an issue.

Top sliding lid seems fairly sturdy, the top is rated for 200 lbs.
It has a slight bowed top though, wish it was perfectly flat.
Cuz you can slid it out a bit past half way, and it makes a nice table top,
enough to use a Coleman stove on, etc.

Also lets you get to your gear from the top.
Image

It is no means water tight, or even dust tight. But it should keep most people out of your gear.
Plus, when you look into the back of the Jeep, all you see is black, instead of a pile of gear.
Not to mention, Jeep Gods forbid, I roll it, etc. There will not be gear flying about the cab, and through the back of my skull.
I plan to get a webbing net to mount on top of it for strapping down any gear I haul on top of it.

[UPDATE] You can see my comments in the post below, but here you can see if handles a load on top just fine also.

Looks great like it a lot. Can you flip the top to slide in either way and if so this might give you a flatter surface if it lets you and the bottem is flat. :)
If its not broken then lets take it apart and lose some of the pieces and then it will be.

Very snazy, I need something like that after I get the CJ back together, If for nothing else than to keep me and pass safe from razor sharp chainsaw, my saw is seriusly sharp my idiot buddy found that out first hand as he walks up and say's that looks sharp and touches it and sliced his finger to the bone, Heres you sign lol we laugh about it now but not so much then. I could just imagine what a flying saw or landing on it. I Have to get something like this, I have a Plastic tool chest but not sure if it will fit or not.

Does it cut down on the noise from the cargo very much? I like the idea of hidding my stuff.

Very nice John. This may be a silly question, but does this render the back seat option completely useless? Is it possible to leave the mounting brackets there, but take the cargo thing out and put the back seat in, or is it just one or the other?

irishjeeper,
Not sure yet, havnt drove the Jeep yet lol
I would think it would cut down any noise the gear made. I just hope the box itself doesnt make any noise,
I will know this week, will be doing some camping and wheeling.

Forbes,
It uses the mounts for the front of the seat, so you have to leave those in.
And you can leave in all the other hardware also.
So yes you can take it out, and put the seat back in. Not real hard to do, cotter pins hold the front in,
and the you would have to take the two rear bolts out of those nutlets. Pull out the box, plop the seat back in.
Still not something I would want to do real often.

Just alittle update, for those that give a crap LOL

I put the Extendatrunk to some good use over my vacation last week.
The top is rated for 200 lbs, and if its spread out, I think it could easily handle that.
I like the fast that I now have two levels, I can still get to the stuff on the bottom, without having to dig for it.
For example, normally, the coolers would have to go on bottom, and the smaller items piled on and around them.
but this setup made it easy to get in the coolers, and still access the stuff underneath.

Image

The top lid did bend down a bit in places from the weight, but it quickly popped itself back into shape once the weight was removed.
Still slides in place as it should, etc.
