Family Jeep Build - '08 JKU

Post by jleadmon » Wed Jan 11, 2012 10:41 am

Hey guys! I'm back!
After many months of discussions and decision making, I decided to sell the TJ and look for a JK.
My wife's only request was to have another jeep in the garage before I sold my TJ... and just that happened.
We bought a 2008 Sahara JKU:
- Hard & Soft Tops (a big bonus for my wife)
- 6 Speed Manual (thank the Lord)
- Power Windows
- Power Looks
- Aftermark tow-package
- A little 2" budget boost
- And the gears... oh' the gears... 3:21's... boo

The jeep is spotless inside and out. You'll see in a few of the pictures where it looks like there is a big scratch or something, but it's not - that's the sun shinning on it. Since we bought it 5 days ago, I haven't had time to clean it real good yet. I can't build this one as quickly as I did the TJ, my wife won't let me :o
Within the next year, I plan on regearing it to 4:88's, have it sitting on 35's, and maybe a new lift. I hate budget boosts, they're a cheap way to do something. I've heard good things from Cox about his 3.5" Rusty's lift - rides better than stock I've heard. I really like the idea of changing the front end to a three-link. We'll see...
I'm going to do little things here and there until I save up the cash to re-gear and put new tires on it. Obviously I want bumpers and winch, but it'll take time. Maybe I'll find some good deals like I did with my TJ :-D

Ok, so... here's the photos... Out with the old, in with the new!

Here's one from when it was at the dealership..

Mari, my wife, told me I HAD to buy some heavy-duty floor mats. So, $225 later, I've got them. The front and back seat floor mats aren't in yet, but here's the rear mat..

Image

The mat is awesome, it fits like a jewel. I would definitly recommend these to someone... they ar worth the money.

I also bought the tailgate G.E.A.R. setup from Smittybilt, love it too.

Image

It looks faded in the pictures, but it's not... that's just the sun shinning on it. You have to drill holes in the tailgate, then screw in self-tappers provided with the kit. All the reviews were saying people were stripping the bolt heads. Morons - they weren't using the right tools. I used my impact for the self-tappers and worked like a champ. I didn't mess up one bolt.

Oh yea, and the JK came with a spiffy dash-tray that the previous owner had bought. I'm diggin' it, it makes that space above the radio actually usefull...

Image

I ordered an XRC Dual Steering Stabilizer from Rough Country yesterday. They said it should be here tomorrow, I'll post up pictures of that installed as well.

After the jeep gets paid off, that's when I have the green light to actually start building it bigger. By then, I'm hoping for a 4.5" or higher lift and 37's. But we'll see... that's a ways off. This build is going to be slow... My wife conctrols the money :D

Welcome back buddy! Put some tires on it and wheel it the way it is. You'll be impressed. But yeah, those gears are gonna suck.

Yea, my wife couldn't figure out what gear she needed to be in when we were driving down the interstate. I told her gears and 35's would fix that problem :bigthumb:

Stick? I didn't say 'stiick' ... I said Manual, as in Manual Transmission.
