Smacker axle upgrade??? opinions please

Post by mdslngr77 » Thu Dec 19, 2013 10:45 pm

Question : I am debating on my axle upgrade. I have found Scout D44s and Toyota FJ axles. The fjs will be a couple of inches wider, will come with lower stock gears but will still need regeared for my liking. I'll have to get new wheels or spacer/adapters for my wheels. The steering will adapt easily as will the driveshafts.

The 44s are the right bolt pattern, about the perfect width. Will definitely need regeared and most likely will have to have new carriers for the gears. The steering is questionable on adapting easily to my setup. The FJ has larger ring gear .

Gear options are pretty much the same - I believe upgrades are more readily available for the FJs.

What do ya'll think?

Id go Yota (and not just because I own one.) Id say the extra width could be beneficial where the smacker is a bit more top heavy, third members are stout, and if you wanted to get different rims instead of adapters keep in mind toyota and six lug Chevy had the same bolt pattern (dont know if they still do) so some cheap steelies shouldn't be that hard or pricey to pick up

for no bigger than that rig is I'd opt for a Dana 30HP front and a Ford 8.8 or a Chrysler 8.25 rear..... Narrower and easier to put on a standard car trailer..... However, if you went with 60's the axles would weigh more than your rig so you could drive it almost vertically and it wouldn't roll..... LOL

You might as well leave the stock axles in. This would be a waste of time and money..

Go with the yotas.

If there 40s or even 80s the dif is offset just like a sammy
the 40s birfields are like mini truck axels
the 80s are massive like comparing a 60 to a 44

Just running my grooved 33's for now - Might bump up to 35's but no bigger than that. I am running sammi stuff now and I have been destroying it. Mutiple broken birfields, one grenaded front locker, and stripped rear ring and pinion.. destroying the little stuff is the whole reason I want to upgrade some

I would say don't build any more axle than your gonna need.... seems the 40's need alot of upgrades to be strong which equals money..... I'll stick with the 30/8.8 suggestion because the cost is minimal and regardless of what you hear they're plenty strong enough for 35's. Don't get caught up in the "Pirate Hype" and do a little reading..... My MJ probably weighs twice as much as your rig and I run the hardest trail IVY has locked front and rear with 36SX Super Swampers.... Inexpensive and strong..... no hype.....

I'm not trying to pirate hype anybody. If I was gonna do a swap I wouldn't waste my time with a 30. The 8.8 will hold up fine with 35s the 30 won't last long. I actually know this from experience. You'll find out eventually. More axle than you need is better than a axle that your gonna want to swap out again because it's anemic.
